Walk the Wards – Update from Shropshire Council Chief Executive, Tanya Miles

Following the recent Walk the Wards visit in Tern Ward, Shropshire Council Chief Executive Tanya Miles has provided an update on issues raised by Uffington, Withington and surrounding communities. Cllr Brendan Mallon continues to engage with officers to obtain full responses, including on matters not yet addressed.

Summary of Updates from Shropshire Council

1. Uffington – Trial Removal of Waste Bin

Street Scene will arrange removal of the bin and confirm the timescale.

2. Withington – Request for New Waste Bin

Street Scene advises that repurposing the Uffington bin may cause issues if reinstatement is later required. They are assessing the financial and resource implications of providing a new bin.

3. Road Repairs – Prioritisation Criteria

Shropshire Council uses a data‑led Asset Management approach, endorsed by the Department for Transport, drawing on:

• Network condition data

• Customer enquiries

• Reactive defect reports

• Validation by area teams

4. Pothole Repairs – Quality Assurance

Quality checks are carried out by Multevo supervisors and Council officers. Photographs are taken before, during and after most reactive repairs, and issues identified are rectified at no cost to the Council.

5. Road Sweeping – Withington

Sweeping takes place four times per year, limited to Sunnyfields and Woodlands Close, the only roads with kerbing.

6. Haughmond Hill – Proposed Double Yellow Lines

Statutory consultation for the TRO must be completed before design and programming can proceed. Timescales are not yet confirmed.

7. Uffington – Signage Obscured by Vegetation

Street Scene requires confirmation of exact locations and whether hedges are Council‑maintained. Some vegetation clearance has taken place on the B5062, though several signs still require cleaning.

8. Corbet Arms – Proposed Double Yellow Lines

Planning permission 24/04016/FUL requires the applicant to submit and deliver a TRO scheme before the extension is used.

• No discharge‑of‑condition application has been received.

• The planning agent has been contacted but not responded.

• If the applicant does not progress the scheme, the Parish Council has asked Shropshire Council to consider delivering it directly, subject to funding and consultation.

No confirmed timescale is available.

9. Rubbish in the River Severn

The Environment Agency advises:

• They intervene only where debris causes a flood‑risk blockage.

• No such blockage has been reported.

• Litter removal is the responsibility of the riparian landowner.

11. Withington Village Green – Land Transfer

Legal Services are being chased for progress. A further update is expected shortly.

“There are some satisfactory responses in this update and some areas where the point has not yet been fully addressed. There is also no response at this stage regarding the Upton Magna BESS application. I will continue to engage with officers to obtain definitive answers to all matters raised.”
